چکیده

[1] We analyze the temperature anomaly of the Pinatubo eruption using an exact mathematical solution of a standard energy balance model that includes coupling between the mixed layer and the thermocline. Our solution yields a short response time t = 4.4 months and a small climate sensitivity l = 0.22 C/(W/m), implying short-term negative feedback. Also, our analysis determines a value of the effective eddy diffusion constant k = 2 10 6 m/s that is much smaller than that assumed in many climate models. We find for this model that the heat flux to the thermocline reverses sign and integrates to zero for any forcing of finite duration. This effect should be observable in any future Pinatubotype event. Citation: Douglass, D. H., R. S. Knox, B. D. Pearson, and A. Interannual variations in continental - scale net carbon exchange and sensitivity to observing networks estimated from atmospheric CO 2 inversions for the period 1980 to 2005

[1] Interannually varying net carbon exchange fluxes from the TransCom 3 Level 2 Atmospheric Inversion Intercomparison Experiment are presented for the 1980 to 2005 time period. The fluxes represent the model mean, net carbon exchange for 11 land and 11 ocean regions after subtraction of fossil fuel CO2 emissions. Both aggregated regional totals and the individual regional estimates are accompa...

Report of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea

Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...

Time-Dependent Ventilated Thermocline

In this thesis, I study the time-varying behavior of a ventilated thermocline with basin scales at annual and decadal time scales. The variability is forced by three external forcings: the wind stress (chapter 3), the surface heat flux (chapter 4) and the upwelling along the eastern boundary (chapter 5). It is found that the thermocline variability is forced mainly by wind in a shadow zone whil...

Thermocline mixing and vertical oxygen fluxes in the stratified central North Sea

In recent decades, the central North Sea has been experiencing a general trend of decreasing dissolved oxygen (O2) levels during summer. To understand potential causes driving lower O2, we investigated a 3-day period of summertime turbulence and O2 dynamics in the thermocline and bottom boundary layer (BBL). The study focuses on coupling biogeochemical with physical transport processes to ident...

Evidence of the Barrier Layer in the Surface Layer of the Tropics

Comparisons between isothermal depth to the top of the thermocline, and the mixed layer depth based on a ot criterion were undertaken for the tropical world oceans. In three equatorial regions, a shallower mixed layer than isothermal layer occurs, implying the presence of a strong halocline above the thermocline. This distance separating the top of the thermocline and the bottom of the mixed la...
